When Should You Order Your Nursery Furniture?

When Should You Order Your Nursery Furniture?

Here's a question I get all the time: "When should I actually start shopping for nursery furniture?"

My answer, every single time, without hesitation: NOW!. Like... right now. Whatever week you're on, whatever trimester you're in, whatever stage of planning you're at. The answer is always sooner than you think.  I know that might sound a little dramatic. But after years of working with expectant parents, I've seen what happens when people wait too long... and I've also seen the pure relief on someone's face when their nursery is completely done and ready weeks before their due date. I will always choose the second outcome for my customers. Every single time.

Let me break down exactly why timing matters so much and what you should realistically expect when it comes to ordering nursery furniture.

The Lead Time Reality Check

This is the part most people don't know going in, and it's the most important thing I can tell you...

Quality nursery furniture is not like ordering something off Amazon. Many of our pieces are custom-made or made-to-order, meaning your order goes into production after you place it. And depending on the brand, the collection, and the finish you choose, lead times can vary significantly...

- Standard in-stock pieces: typically 2-4 weeks

- Made-to-order or custom finish pieces: anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks

- Back-ordered items: even pieces that normally ship in 3 weeks can sometimes be on backorder with no guaranteed timeline (remember how crazy long it took to get things during the pandemic? Unfortunately that sometimes still happens - especially with so many unknown and variable factors like tariff hold-ups / port closures / union strikes / etc.)

That last one is the sneaky one. You might find a collection that's "usually" quick to ship... but inventory fluctuates. Supply chains have hiccups. A piece that was available last week might be on backorder today. There is genuinely no way to predict it with certainty, which is exactly why playing it safe and ordering early is always the smarter move.

The last thing I ever want is for you to fall completely in love with a set that has a 12-week lead time... and then have to talk yourself out of it because you only have 8 weeks until your due date. Order early and you never have to make that compromise!

We'll Hold It For You... No Rush on Delivery

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: "But I don't want the furniture delivered before the room is ready." Completely valid! And here's the good news... ordering early does not mean you have to take delivery early.

Once your order is ready, we'll hold it right here at our warehouse for you. When the room is painted, the wallpaper is up, the floors are done... whenever you give us the green light, that's when we schedule the white glove delivery and assembly. Your timeline, your call.

This way you get the best of both worlds: you lock in the pieces you love without the time pressure, and delivery happens exactly when it makes sense for you and your space.

The Third Trimester is Not the Time to be Waiting on Furniture

Okay let me paint you a picture. You're 35 weeks pregnant. You just had your baby shower and your living room is covered in onesies, swaddles, tiny socks, and an absolutely overwhelming number of adorable gifts that need a home. You're nesting hard. You want to organize, prepare, set up... and your nursery furniture still hasn't arrived.

That is a scenario I have seen play out more times than I can count. And I'm telling you... it is stressful in a way that is so unnecessary and so avoidable.

Here's the thing about the third trimester that nobody warns you about enough: the nesting instinct is REAL. Like, hormonally, physiologically real. Your body and brain are wired to want to prepare the nest before baby arrives. Having a finished, organized nursery isn't just aesthetically satisfying... it's genuinely calming on a psychological level, especially for first-time moms. It's part of mentally and emotionally preparing for one of the biggest transitions of your life.

You cannot nest without a dresser. You cannot organize without furniture. And nobody wants to be making frantic phone calls about delivery timelines at 37 weeks. Trust me on this one.

"But Can't I Just Wait Until After the Baby Is Born?"

I hear this one too. The logic makes sense on paper: newborns sleep in a bassinet for the first few months anyway, so technically you have some runway after birth to get the nursery sorted. And you know what... that's true.

But here's what I also know from experience: almost everyone who says they'll be fine waiting until after the baby comes... isn't fine waiting until after the baby comes. LOL!

You're postpartum. You're sleep deprived. You're adjusting to an entirely new life with a newborn. The last thing you want to be managing is delivery scheduling, furniture assembly, and trying to organize a room while running on three hours of sleep. The version of you at 38 weeks who hasn't had the baby yet is significantly more capable of handling this than the version of you at 2 weeks postpartum. And I promise I am saying that with so much love.

Get the nursery done before baby arrives. You will thank yourself endlessly.

The Baby Shower Timing Sweet Spot

Here's my honest recommendation for the ideal nursery timeline...

Order your furniture as early as possible... ideally by the end of your second trimester. Then aim to have delivery scheduled shortly after your baby shower. Why after the shower? Because once those gifts come rolling in, the nesting instinct kicks into absolute overdrive. You'll want a dresser to fold those onesies into. You'll want a bookshelf for the board books. You'll want to see the whole room come together. You'll want to spend some nights sitting quietly in your rocker, soaking in all of the peaceful quiet moments (before the beautiful storm, lol).

Having your furniture delivered and assembled right around that time gives you the perfect window to get everything organized, set up, and just... sit in the nursery and feel ready. That feeling is genuinely one of the best parts of the whole journey. Don't rush it and don't skip it.

What If You're Already Running Behind?

First... no judgment. Life happens, time flies, and suddenly you're 32 weeks and realizing the nursery is still an empty room. It's okay! Here's what to know...

We do carry a selection of in-stock pieces for situations exactly like this. If you need something quickly, reach out and I'll tell you honestly what's available and what the realistic timeline looks like. The trade-off is that your options will be more limited than if you'd ordered earlier... but I will always do everything we can to work with your situation!

The best offerings, the widest selection, the custom finish options, the pieces you're most likely to absolutely fall in love with... those are available to the people who plan ahead. So if you haven't ordered yet and you're reading this... this is your sign.

It's Neverrrrrrr Too Early to Start Shopping...

And I mean never! The earlier you order, the more options you have, the less stress you carry into your third trimester, and the more time you get to actually enjoy your beautiful finished nursery before baby arrives.

Order early. We'll hold it until you're ready. And when that white glove delivery day comes and you watch your nursery come together piece by piece in front of your eyes... you are going to be so glad you didn't wait.
