Where Do I Even Start? A Nursery Design Guide

Where Do I Even Start? A Nursery Design Guide

Can we talk about the pressure for a second? Somewhere along the way, designing a nursery went from "let's make this room cozy and safe for the baby" to a full-blown aesthetic competition. Pinterest boards, Instagram reels, influencer nursery reveals... it's a lot. And if you're sitting there thinking "I don't even know where to begin"... well first of all, you are not alone. I hear that literally every single day. Second of all... that's exactly what I'm here for and why I do what I do!

Whether you already have a crystal-clear vision or absolutely zero idea as to what you want, this guide will (hopefully) walk you through how to actually approach designing your nursery.   Without the overwhelm, without the pressure, and without ending up with a rug you're obsessed with that doesn't match anything else in the room. (We've all been there, right? Or am I possibly projecting just a little bit over here? lol)

Start With Your "One Thing"

Here's a little trick that works for so many people who feel creatively stuck: stop trying to envision the whole room at once and just find your one thing.

Maybe it's a rug with an incredible pattern? Maybe it's a piece of artwork or a wall hanging that stops you in your tracks? Maybe it's a set of curtains in the most perfect shade of dusty sage? Whatever it is... that one item you absolutely love can simply become the creative anchor for everything else.

What colors are in it? What's the mood it gives off? Suddenly you have a palette, a vibe, a direction. BUT!!! (and this is important) There's a flip side to this approach that I always warn people about... There is nothing worse than buying almost everything for your nursery, feeling really good about how it's coming together... but then you stumble across a rug you're now completely obsessed with. Except the pattern is on the busy side, the colors are off, and it just doesn't work with anything you already bought. Now you're either stuck with a rug you can't get out of your head but that doesn't fit... or you're now possibly starting over. Neither is fun (and the latter is definitely quite hefty on the wallet).

So if you're going to lead with a statement piece, lead with it FIRST. Let it be your compass from the very beginning, not a late addition that throws everything off. And if you're anything like me... once you buy something, just force yourself to commit to it so you don't drive yourself crazy doubting yourself if you continue looking at other nursery inspo online.

Figure Out Your "Busiest" Element First

Another way to approach finding a good starting point for the nursery room could also be asking yourself "What item in this room do I want to be the most visually bold?

Is it:

* A patterned wallpaper covering an entire wall?

* A statement rug with a lot going on?

* An absolutely gorgeous furniture set that speaks volumes in itself?

* A bold piece of framed artwork or a large wall hanging?

* Patterned curtains?

(and hey, no shame here if all of the above apply to you because you are a proud maximalist with range, lol)

Whatever your answer is... let that be the piece that come first on your shopping list. Start there and let everything else breathe around it. The busiest element sets the tone, and everything else should complement it rather than compete with it. Even maximalist rooms that look effortlessly layered are built around one dominant visual anchor. The rest of it is just really well-curated chaos.

If You're Truly Stuck? Start With the Furniture. Always.

Okay here's where I am going to get on my soapbox for a second... and I promise it's not just because furniture is what I do... but there's a genuinely practical reason for this and I've been giving this advice for yearsssssss...

Just think about a room in terms of scale. Furniture takes up the largest footprint of any element in a space. It's also the most permanent (usually)... so it's not like you're going to swap out your bed or dresser every single time you want a change of scenery the way you might swap out a throw pillow or repaint a wall. Good furniture, especially the investment-level pieces, are meant to last for years... if not decades and potentially GENERATIONS. They're the bones of the room.

Wallpaper, rugs, paint colors, throw blankets, decorative objects... all of that can be changed relatively easily over time. And honestly? If you're anything like me, refreshing those elements every few years is genuinely fun. It's the interior decorator's equivalent of a haircut. But the furniture stays. Almost always. Because in all honesty... times are also pretty tough out there for a lot of us millenials, so replacing furniture constantly (whether that's due to poor quality or simply the changing of trends) is just not a financially savvy move either. Whereas a new pillow cover, for Idk $15-$30, is a much more reasonable re-purchase for a new decorative vibe in a room).

To paint a picture for you so you can visualize the exact scenario I want you to avoid, I will tell you this is a story I have heard countless times while working inside of a nursery furniture showroom.  You fall in love with a bold yellow accent wall. So you paint it. You build an entireeeeee nursery vision around it. Then you browse our site and completely fall head over heels for a furniture set... except it looks terrible against yellow. Now what? You either compromise on furniture you love (which you know you're going to have for many years to come) or repaint a wall you already painted. Nobody wants that problem.

So start with the furniture. Let it be your guiding compass. Because the funnest part of it all is that if and when you fall in love with, Idk let's just say a 2-tone olive and taupe dresser, or a PINK furniture set, or a rustic white'ish/grey'ish crib... suddenly you have SO much to work with. So much more inspiration to work off of!  Those colors, that finish, that energy... it can now help tell you exactly what wall color would best complement it, what rug will ground it, what artwork will feel right above the dresser. The furniture itself can sometimes tells the story and the rest of the room just fills in the blanks.

And If You Stillllllllll Don't Know What You Want?

That is completely okay... and honestly more common than you'd think. Trust me when I say 70% of my clients are expecting parents who are totally overwhelmed by the idea of creating or designing an entirely new room and do not know where to even begin, especially once they start looking online and see hundreds more cribs than they ever thought was possible.  This is where starting with a mere -vibe- instead of a specific look can be a total game changer.

You don't need to know the exact furniture collection or the specific shade of paint just yet. You just need to know how you want the room to FEEL. How YOU want to feel when inside of it and more importantly, how you want your newborn babe to feel in it as well.  Any remotely self-aware human being can ask themselves one of these few simple questions...

* Do I want to walk into this room and feel calm and serene, or energized and joyful?

* Am I drawn to light and airy feelings in a room, or warm and cozy?

* Do I love clean lines and minimal clutter, or do I want layers and texture and personality everywhere?

* Am I a "less is more" person or a "more is more" person?

Even just knowing that you cherish a clean, orderly space and hate feeling visually overwhelmed... that alone can be a powerful starting point. It rules out an entire category of directions and points you straight toward something like a light and airy Scandi-inspired nursery or a soft contemporary minimalist aesthetic. From there, the specific pieces start to reveal themselves pretty naturally.  And that's exactly the kind of conversation I loveeeeee having during a mood board consultation.... and if you're curious about what that looks like, then keep reading.

Let Me Make You a Personalized Mood Board!

Nursery design is personal, and sometimes you just need someone to bounce ideas off of, show you some options, and help narrow things down in a way that actually feels like YOU. One blog post can only say soooo much. That's why I offer free mood board consultations!

Once you schedule a quick little 15-30 minute consultation with me, here's how it works:

* you tell me a little about yourself (your vibe, your space, your budget)

* I put together a curated set of inspo images and furniture options tailored specifically to you.

* We go through it together, you react to things (yes or no, love it or hate it), and from those reactions I develop a clear direction that feels authentic to your style. No pressure, no commitment, just clarity.

* From there I will then curate a much more personalized "mood board" for you and send it back over to you along with a "Shopping List" so that you can literally re-create that room for yourself, in real life. And if you love the furniture, then I obviously know someone (wink wink) who can help you out with that part, too! hehe.

This is honestly the most fun part of what I do. Helping someone go from "I have no idea" to "oh my gosh THIS is exactly it".  It honestly never gets old, so pleaseeeee feel free to reach out through the contact page and/or schedule your free mood board consultation with me (Rae Rae) and let's get chatting. Your dream nursery is closer than you think, andi it's allllll going to be okay no matter what you decide on!

And When the Furniture Arrives... White Glove Delivery Matters More Than You Think

It would feel wrong to not include a little tidbit here about one of the final steps in the process that can literally save you soooo mcuh extra stress (and time)!  You've done all this work to get to this point: researched all the brands, fallen in love with the pieces, made the investment and finally finalized a purchase. I can almost guarantee you that the very last thing you would want is for your beautiful new crib to show up in a box on your porch, in pieces, with a set of instructions and a bag of hardware, and a baby (or burrito?) belly that is about to "pop" any day now.

This is why I always say that "white glove delivery" isn't a luxury add-on. For furniture at this level, it really should be the standard... and it's something I genuinely believe every nursery furniture purchase deserves. And that is exactly why on qualifying orders of $2,499+ we go right on ahead and include it for free with your order.  Just so you can visualize it, here's what that actually means...

* Delivery into a room of your choice (not just dropped off the back of an 18-wheel truck, or left at the door during a thunderstorm, or simply dropped in a garage... and yes, it's also okay if it has to go up multiple flights of stairs)

* Full assembly (every crib is put together properly by people who know what they're doing in likely a 1/4 of the time it would take you, and every single other heavy piece of furniture is carefully removed from the box and placed exactly where you want it)

* Packaging removed and hauled away (which means no mountains of cardboard for you to deal with or 3+ very annoying trips to the dump)

* Final placement where you want it (so you can actually see how the room comes together and make sure everything is exactly where you want to leave it)

When you're 8 months pregnant or already home with a newborn, the idea of assembling anything and figuring out crib hardware is... a lot. White glove delivery means your nursery is ready to go by the time we walk out the door.  No stress, no mess, no missing screws. Just your beautiful room, exactly as you pictured it.

So don't forget.... here at New Jersey Cribs, every order over $2,499 includes free white glove delivery and assembly. Because you have a far more important delivery to focus on. And in the meantime... HAPPY DECORATING! Please don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to help you along this very exciting (or maybe overwhelming?) journey!
